Week 8
This week the students had the local measures exam on Tuesday and Wednesday. I had never heard of this exam and I found out this is the exam that covers math, language arts, and writing. The student must take this exam to demonstrate their knowledge to the district then the district can determine the schools needs. Due to the exam, I didn’t have much of an opportunity to teach on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, I did teach another lesson on Thursday. My master teacher is pretty flexible and willing to let me take over any subject area. However for the next few weeks I decided that I should take as many opportunities as possible to teach math so that I could feel comfortable teaching math in my pact lesson. For the math lesson this week, I taught the students about Metric and Customary Capacity Conversions. In order to teach my students how to do Metric and Customary Capacity Conversions, I used the lesh model. The lesh model is teaching strategies I learned about from my master teacher. The lesh model consists of a four quadrant box. In the first quadrant is a real life situation and each of the other quadrants consists of different ways to solve the real life situation like solve by using a table, solve by using multiplication, solve by drawing a picture. Basically, the lesh model requires student to solve each real life situation in three different ways. I like this model because students get see that there is more then one way to solve a problem and they can find the strategy that works best for them. My master teacher uses this model frequently with the students so the students are very familiar with it. Overall, the lesson went over well. I collected their worksheets and the results showed me that most of the students understood the concept of metric conversions.
