Week 7
This week I continued to lead small group guided reading during Universal Access. With more practice, this became easier and more natural for me. I did not have come up with reading question beforehand or look at the critical thinking question list to come up with questions. I started to be able to come up with questions as we read. This made me much more comfortable leading guided reading. Mrs. Smith observed me while I lead guided reading and after gave me some suggestions. She told me that it is common for student to mispronounce words or have difficulty saying a word but I should not tell them the correct way to pronounce the word until they have tried sounding it out. She told me some tips are to ask the student if the word they mispronounced sounds like another word they have heard of and have the student break apart the word to help them sound it out. This tips I greatly appreciated and utilized when I encounter the situation again during guided reading. I also taught another whole group math lesson this week. This week I taught the class a lesson on Customary Capacity. For the lesson, I showed the students a brain pop video on customary capacity then I asked them, what unit of capacity they would use to measure the capacity of a bathtub, a glass of water, and a pot. Then we completed a worksheet on capacity together and afterwards the students completed another capacity worksheet by themselves. Overall this lesson went smoothly. I collected the worksheet the students completed by themselves and from looking at the worksheets, the majority of the students understood the concept.
