Week 3
This week was my third week at King Chavez and also happened to be Dr. Seuss week at the school! When I arrived at King Chavez on Monday, all the teachers were wearing Dr. Seuss hats in honor of Dr. Seuss week. For Dr. Seuss week, literacy is promoted all week long. All of the students are required to carry a reading book with them on campus at all times in case of the “Stop drop and read announcement”. When this announcement comes on to the intercom, all of the students are required to stop, drop, and read their book. These announcements came on various times throughout the week and the students all participated. It was so cool to see the whole school community united on theme of reading. I thought it was a great way to promote literacy. This week in my classroom, the students learned about paragraph structure, making inferences homophones/homographs, and area and perimeter. I continued to work with individual student who needed help and I finally started to work with small groups. On Tuesday, I worked with a small group during reading. Together we read a short story and worked on the concept of “making inferences” throughout the story. At the end of the story, I asked the students comprehension questions and they practiced making inferences. Overall, the small group lesson went well but we finished early so next time I need to pace the lesson better. On Wednesday, King Chavez arts and athletics 3-5 had an awards assembly in the autotorium. During this assembly, various students were recognized for outstanding academic and character. I learned that these assemblies happen every month. I thought it was so special how the school acknowledges character in addition to academics. Many of the students at the school do not get a lot of support or acknowledgement at home so I’m glad the school provides that for them. I feel like it helps keep the students encouraged and motivated.
